Narrating Tales of Preschool Storytime

Bookmark Contest

This summer I decided it was time to do a bookmark contest.  I got the idea from the Pendleton Public Library. A coworker of mine had visited them a few years ago and brought back some bookmarks that the kids had made.  I finally implemented it this summer and it was a HUGE hit!  I don’t even know how many forms we passed out, but it was easily over 200.  Out of those we got back 54.  I think that’s a pretty good turn out!  I told them to design a bookmark based on our Summer Reading theme “Dig Into Reading” and they all did such a great job.  There were 3 age groups: 4-7, 8-11, 12-17.  There was one winner from each age group and those winners received a $10 gift card to Target, then there was one overall winner who received a $20 gift card to Barnes and Noble Bookstore.  And of course all the winners bookmarks were made into bookmarks to be given out at the library.  Here are the winning designs, the yellow on is the overall winner:

Bookmark Contest WinnersI made a display with all the other participants so they could see their bookmarks hung up in the library:

This is definitely something I will do every summer!  Oh, and here is the handout I made to give the kids for the contest

We made these adorable owls out of craft tubes!  Notice I didn’t say toilet paper tubes.  I don’t like to collect those at work for crafts, it kinda grosses me out.  So, I was able to purchase them here!

Hand Print Art!

Hand print art 1

I had a special program this week where we made hand print art!  The kids loved it so much.  But who doesn’t love getting messy?!  It was for ages 3-8 and there was a pretty good range of ages.  First I had them come in and get an apron, paper plate, paper, and foam paint brush.  Then I explained to them all what we were going to be doing.  I figured it would be best to just pick two things and have the kids make those rather then have them go crazy doing whatever.  So we made an octopus and a bird.  They turned out so cute!  I cannot believe how clean everyone was at the end.  The aprons were spotless as well as the tables.  This is the paint I used from Lakeshore, it was awesome and cleaned up very nicely.  Here are some of the kid’s artwork:
